Gabon - Birding Tour

Tour Background

Capital: Libreville
Currency: CAF (Central African Franc)
Climate: Always hot, always humid.
Geography: Gabon consists of a small population. Its oil and mineral reserves have helped Gabon become one of Africa's wealthier countries, which have allowed the country to maintain and conserve its pristine rain forest and rich biodiversity.
Terrain: Narrow coastal plain; hilly interior; savanna in East and South.

Gabon, situated on the West African coast south of Equatorial Guinea, bordered on the North by Cameroon, Elephantthe East and South by Congo and the West by the South Atlantic Ocean. It is a former French colony inhabited by merely 1 million people, with immense areas of tropical rainforests and uncharted Atlantic Coastline.

The Rain Forest belt of Gabon is the greatest intact forest area in all of Africa and one of the largest in the world. These tropical rain forests with their superb array of birds also have a wide diversity of primates, where Lowland Gorillas and Chimpanzees are still relatively common. Due to the low population and small infrastructure these primates and other large mammals flourish in the region.

Rivers scar the face of Gabon's escarpment with deep channels before meandering towards the Northern Coastline where bays, estuaries and deltas stretch as far South as the mouth of the Ogooue (or Ogawe) River. The Ogawe is the principle river of Gabon and forms a watershed of 223, 856 sq km, consisting mainly of undisturbed forests with some grassland.

The coastal belt is home to thousands of turtles, which return to nest on the beach, and it is natural Forest Walkto see Buffaloes and Forest Elephants roaming the sand and taking in a salty drink from the Atlantic. This is truly one of the "last wildernesses" on earth.

Our tour (see below) will take you to a vast reserve in central Gabon, La Lope, which holds not only the highest population of primates in the world, but also with its multiple habitats has an astonishing list of bird species. Although most of our time will be spent in the jungle, we will visit an area near the Congo Highlands that holds many grassland species in a mixed Miombo woodland and heath land habitat characterized by unusual stunted Protea-like scrub. Here near Franceville we will wander over the plains in search of Congo moorchat, try to flush a Finsch's Francolin and watch Denham's and White-bellied Bustards striding across the veld. By the time we finally return to Libreville we will have seen a superb selection of Central and West African birds in one of the few countries in the region where pristine wilderness is not just a memory.
